According to the United Nations Environment Program, roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year,
about 1.3 billion tons of food, gets lost or wasted. www.unep.org/wed/2013/quickfacts/ |
When food is relentlessly wasted, precious resources like water, land , energy, and labor are wasted as a result. And more food needs to be made which needlessly produces greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change.

A psychologist named Abraham Maslow came up with the philosophy of the hierarchy of needs. Maslow says that you must completely satisfy your lower level of basic needs before moving on to other needs that should be addressed. One of the needs on that lowest level is food, so if members of our society do not have that basic necessity of food then they can not focus on other things like their health, getting a job, having meaningful relationships, and self esteem. If someone does not have enough food then they have a hard time living full healthy lives and contributing to our society.
